“Exploring Psychology: scientific approaches about the human Entity” – Psychoanalysis – Behaviorism
Ranging from the question of the creation of the universe to the mystery of even the smallest cell’s function, from the physical laws to the structure of economical and social systems, man’s search for truth has led to the development of sciences.
Even though every science isolates and studies only one specific aspect of the world, one part of reality, the essence of them all is to discover the truth about the nature of the world, that of life and human beings.
It is through this perspective that we started the discussion, before moving on to study in detail the science of psychology.
Psychology demonstrates the need of human beings to develop self-awareness, to aim at understanding who we are and find solutions to our problems.
We talked about the aim of psychology: to help everyone find balance, discover avenues for self expression and feel more complete. We discovered that this is approached via various theories, different approaches and techniques, trials and errors, or even false paths that are sometimes followed (it is a newly established science after all).
We retraced its historical roots and spoke about the two important schools of thought that were born with its establishment: behaviorism and psychoanalysis.
We then moved onto reflecting upon individuals’ attempts towards deconstructing their understanding of identity, realising the complexity of the human entity and discovering ways towards facilitating problem solving. We also witnessed how the debate of ideas leads to the progress of science.
Several questions were raised and critical thinking began to unfold within the group, opening a dialogue which will be continued in our next meeting.
